Accelerating Canada-Gabon Trade and Investment - Libreville, October 2021
In early October 2021, Chamber President Garreth Bloor travelled to Libreville, together with Chamber member Jacques NdoutouMvé and our local partners at GERME Consulting, to accelerate trade and investment between Canada and the Republic of Gabon. The delegation was warmly received at senior levels of government, including by Gabon's national investment promotion agency, and met with the leadership of BGFI Bank, the Gabonese-managed financial group active in 15 countries across Central Africa and beyond. Discussions focused on three priority areas for Canadian business: responsible mining and innovation, spanning Gabon's established manganese sector and its largely unexplored deposits of gold, iron ore, rare earths and other minerals; agriculture and mechanization; and energy, renewable energy and digitization. Throughout, Gabon's position as a stable, upper-middle-income gateway to the CEMAC region was underscored as a key advantage for Canadian companies.
The visit laid the groundwork for the Chamber's ongoing engagement with Gabon, including plans for a Gabon-Canada Trade and Investment Forum, participation by a Gabonese delegation led by the Minister of Mines at PDAC in Toronto in June 2022, and the Republic of Gabon's accession to the Chamber during Africa Accelerating 2022.
